There are a lot of online guitar lesson membership sites out there. All of them are claiming to provide the “goods” to teach you to be a great guitar player. While online guitar lesson websites aren’t a new concept, JamPlay has taken the online membership model to a new level.

By providing more then just access to a bunch of videos JamPlay has managed to structure an online learning environment perfect for guitar players of all skill levels, and for a price that doesn’t break the bank.

3 Stages of Video Instruction

JamPlay has organized their lessons into 3 separate phases (check out how they teach):

  • Phase 1 – Beginner Lessons
  • Phase 2 – Intermediate & Genre/Style Specific Lessons
  • Phase 3 – Song Lessons

JamPlay employs more then 30 different instructors who each specialize in their own area and provide lesson content specifically for that area.

By following the specific phases laid out by JamPlay you learn to play guitar faster by following a lesson plan that works, and specific instructors that specialize in the area they’re teaching. This means you’ll be playing your favorite songs faster, and moving into specific genres and styles (blues, jazz, acoustic, rock) much quicker then if you were taking private lessons from only one teacher.
High Def Videos Make Learning Easier

All of the lesson content inside JamPlays 3 phases is recorded in High Definition (see sample lesson). Each video lesson is divided up into separate chapters that are more easily digestible then the full 20-40 minute lessons (you have the choice to watch a full lesson or watch individual chapters).

Since videos are the easiest way to learn guitar on your own, you will understand concepts faster and be able to progress at a quicker pace. This means you’ll be playing full songs and music sooner then with other self study methods of guitar.

The ability to select specific scenes/chapters in each lesson means you don’t have to watch an entire lesson at once. This is great if you’re a busy individual and for re-watching specific parts of a lesson for review.

JamPlay’s online guitar lesson videos ensure you receive a crystal clear understanding of the techniques being taught. By using multiple camera angles and on screen graphics.

There are quite a few additional features you gain access to with a JamPlay membership.

  • Extensive Printable Chord Library
  • Scale Library
  • Lick & Riff Library
  • Backing Tracks Catalog

While these features are more important after you go through your first several beginner lessons they provide quick and easy access to chords, scales and riffs while your practicing and/or jamming with friends.
JamPlay Q & A

JamPlay offers weekly Q & A sessions with all of their instructors. This is a unique feature to their membership course. You can post questions for instructors in the private support/membership site and teachers will provide video responses to your questions.

Video responses are like having your own private teacher to call on when you need help. This ensures you avoid getting stuck on something and frustrated which can lead you to putting your guitar down for a bit.

This feature is a one of a kind for beginner programs anywhere. JamPlay is a solid choice for guitar players that are eager to get started learning quickly. Since the entire course is online based you can start watching video lessons just minutes after you sign up.

The only real downside to JamPlay is that fact that it’s entirely based online and you need to be at your computer with an Internet connection to access lesson content. I know it’s pretty easy to come by a net connection these days but for some dvd lessons might be more appealing for this reason.

The other part of what makes JamPlay unique are its social networking features. You can make your own profile, share your interests like favorite bands and make new friends on the site. By participating in the JamPlay community, you will feel a lot more involved and will help your motivation for learning. The site also includes a very active forum, where you can get answers to your questions or just plain hang out.

There’s also a daily webcam sessions with a particular JamPlay teacher which allows you to interact with the instructor over streaming video in a group chat environment. This is a really fun feature that I don’t think any other site offers.

Compared to a similar guitar membership site like Guitar Tricks, JamPlay does cost a little more per month ($19.95 to $12.95). However, the monthly fee is still quite modest, compared to what you would pay for private guitar lessons. Another downside with JamPlay is that you have the be online with a good broadband connection to enjoy the best possible experience. As far as I can tell, there’s no way to download the videos to your computer for offline viewing.

If you are serious about learning to play the guitar and enjoy the idea of being part of a guitar learning community, you should definitely give JamPlay a serious look. At least check out the free lessons they offer on the site to see if you like it. JamPlay suitable for guitar learners of all levels, and it’s definitely a fun and enjoyable way to learn the guitar.
